Developmental
& Neurological

Neurodevelopmental disorders are a group of conditions in which the growth and development of the brain is affected. This can impact an individual’s language, emotions, behaviour, self-control, learning and memory. At Townsville Paediatrics, our main specialty is assessing children for neuro-developmental delays and difficulties, such as assessing and treating children for ADHD, Autism, developmental delays, schooling problems and mental health disorders.

Our assessments diagnose neurodevelopmental disorders. We conduct a clinical interview and assess reports from teachers and parents and then we use clinical criteria to make our diagnosis. When your child is diagnosed with a neurological impairment, you will have a range or questions, especially about what supports and

services are at hand for you, your child and your family.

There are over 600 identified disorders and conditions which may result in a neurological impairment. The early signs of a neurological impairment will vary from child to child. Many children with a neurological impairment will demonstrate developmental delays. Developmental delay is a descriptive term used when a young child’s development is delayed in all or a majority of key developmental areas.

These areas include:

  • Gross motor skills development
  • Fine motor skills development
  • Cognitive development
  • Social and emotional skills development
  • Speech and language development.

Once your child has a diagnosis, we support you to find the best treatments and ongoing care.

If you are looking for a team of Paediatricians to help find a diagnosis and care for your child, reach out to your GP for a referral to see us.
